Fun At the Farmers’ Market
Last weekend Bun and I took the kids to the Farmers’ Market in town. Bun goes there quite often looking for interesting food ideas for the restaurant, and to stay in touch with friends in the local food scene, but I hadn’t been there for ages.
It’s expanded quite a lot since the last time I was there; they’ve cleared an area of waste land next to the market and opened it up to vendors. There’s now a few more people selling non-food items, but also a lot more farmers from further afield.
One of the nicest additions is a small performance space surrounded by food stands where families can sit and relax with a snack. Not sure how they choose the musicians who get to play there, but they certainly have attracted some terrific acts.
My favorites were a band from South America playing folk music from the Andes … lots of guitars, plus some instruments that looked like deeper, bigger guitars, not sure what they were … and a couple of guys playing wooden pipes. There seemed to be two sorts of pipes … one looked like the recorders that we used for music lessons in elementary school, and the other style was more like pan pipes. I always thought those were from Greece, but perhaps they’re more widespread than I realized.
We had a nice lunch there … fish tacos for Bun and I, and burritos for Ketchup & Mustard. We all drank delicious fresh-squeezed lemonade, and capped off the meal with some ice cream made on a local farm. I had Banana Ginger, which sounded like an odd flavor combination but turned out to be sublime.
